The Government of the Mayangna Nation responds to the major concern of the communities and territories in the defense, protection and conservation of their natural resources. They focus on contributing to the strengthening of collective mechanisms for the sustainable community planning and management of the territory and its natural resources for ethno-development. The objective is to establish a radio communication system with coverage to all territories, improvement of Mayangna Intercultural Bilingual Bilingual education and traditional ancestral medicine so that the communities improve their living conditions, taking advantage in a sustainable way of the livelihoods generated from the different spaces of land and territories (fishing, hunting, agriculture, housing, forest, water).

The Mayangna Nation is founded by our elders in the year 1972 under the name of ( ANCS) National Association of Sumu Communities. By the year 1974, it was called LIMON. That meant, Indigenous Uprising of the mountains of the eastern zone of Nicaragua. Then in its development for the year 1976 changed the name to SUKAWALA name in Mayangna native language that means, National Organization of Sumu communities of Nicaragua. 

The nation is a non-profit organization reorganized in April 2009, is the highest stage of the organization that is transformed from association to achieve the figure of Government with National coverage that brings together 75 communities in 6 municipalities with a population of approximately 30,000 inhabitants, in it are the large forest reserves of the country and protected areas such as BOSAWAS.
