the NALC wishes to offer a Learning Landscapes program for Native American youth and families that focuses on Indigenous Language immersion. The beautiful sacred lands of their ancestors along with the teachings from their own Indigenous languages are critical for the intergenerational transmission of culture, spiritual values, and identity. The NALC will incorporate the innovative practice of combining language learning sessions from tribal elders that will be offered virtually in advance with on-site activities at the Old Woman Mountain Preserve or Coyote Hole that will enable immersion and application of vocabulary and language lessons studied and learned.
Local Partner:
The NALC is a non-profit, intertribal organization established in 1998. Our mission is to acquire, preserve, and protect sacred lands through education, cultural programming, and survey and monitoring of Native American historic properties. NALC provides culturally appropriate protective management for cultural heritage areas. Our programs engage 32 tribal communities in California, Arizona, and Nevada. Through our Learning Landscapes program, we inspire tribal youth to engage their history and culture. NALC owns the Old Woman Mountains Preserve (OWMP), a 2,560-acre area located at the junction of three great deserts: the Colorado, the Mojave, and the Great Basin Deserts, allowing youth to explore ancient tribal lifeways across diverse desert landscapes.
The NALC will be collaborating with local tribal communities, including among others, the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians, the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, the Torres Martinez Dessert Cahuilla Indians, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Cahuilla Tribe, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, etc. It will also reach out to the local Tribal Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program/s. It will also collaborate with the California Indian Nations College.
