Background and  objective: 

The project “Documenting and Revitalizing Indigenous Pastoral Maasai Justice systems and Institutions; enhancing linkages and Collaborative Action between Indigenous and State Justice Systems” endeavors to provide an in-depth documentation of the indigenous Justice System of the Maasai of Kenya and Tanzania , enhance awareness, understanding of Kenya’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Policy among IPs and promote positive interactions of the two systems.  Previous project focused on ‘Revitalizing & Synergizing Traditional Justice and Peace Building Systems of Maasai Pastoralist Indigenous Community in Kenya where ILEPA undertook a scoping study on Indigenous Maasai conflict resolution, Peace building and justice system and facilitated a number of dialogue sessions between actors within the Indigenous justice System and those within State administered system.

Initiative endeavors to undertake and publish a comparative study on Maasai Indigenous justice system between the Tanzanian and Kenya Maasai speakers – particularly the Ilpurko and Ilkisongo Territorial Section. Easy to read publication on the Alternative Dispute Resolution Policy.
Enhanced channels for synergizing application of indigenous justice system and that of the State and Judicial departments for more sustainable outcome in conflict resolution, peace building and social justice. Publication of the findings of the comparative Study: Study successfully undertaken, reviewed and validated by Indigenous Justice System Experts, published and available as a useful tool for revitalization of the Indigenous Justice System for the Maa Community. It is a potentially useful output for the entire Maa Community spread across Kenya and Tanzania and for promoters Alternative Justice System (AJS)

Local partner information:

The history of ILEPA is embedded in the history of the land rights struggle of the Maji moto Group Ranch in Narok South, Southern Kenya. Its mission is to promote an indigenous peoples’ wellbeing, improved human rights, good governance and sustainable community-based development. Some of its most successful programs include Human Rights and Governance, Environment and Climate Change, Research and Livelihoods Support.
