Local Partner: “Experiment” Initiative Group
Since ancient times, Altaians have cultivated special relationships with natural springs in particular, holding them and their use sacred, as well as their location. With the onset of civilization, this connected has weakened. As ethnocultural tourism has grown in the Karakol Valley, natural springs have become a targeted site for tourist pilgrimages and thus are in modern demand. As conservation organizations, AARPA and “Experiment” support this trend and propose this project to improve frequently visited springs in order to build ties with traditional culture, protect the springs from damage and spiritual pollution.
After the initiative was completed, the spring in Ongudai became the most visited place in town by local residents in search of healing spring water, as well as by children at play and to learn about the spring. There has been a lot of positive verbal feedback from community elders. At present, after the initiative was completed, work continues at the spring (planting trees, flowers, and grass, signage installation, additional seasonal maintenance, etc.) using other funds.
