Creating Justice

Uksi Productions

Sámi people have fished the Deatnu River for centuries as a livelihood and spiritual practice. However, Finnish government in 2016 imposed strict regulations that criminalized the traditional fishing practice. In 2017 three women and their children broke this government-imposed law to reclaim their traditional rights and turned themselves in, intending in this way to take the case to Court, but the Supreme Court dismissed the charges and ruled that fishing is unconstitutional.

Documentary Home River initiative (25 min) seeks to advocate for Sámi rights and pressure the government to implement Sámi traditional fishing rights. It also seeks to create an opportunity to raise awareness of a wider community, such as other indigenous peoples, human rights organizations and influencers regarding Sámi rights.
