Traditional water knowledge of mountain lake communities in Kyrgyzstan

The initiative group “Suuchular” (The Waterers)

The initiative’s goal is to document, interpret, and disseminate local climate change indicators from indigenous communities living around Lake Ysykkul (which represents a unique combination of mountain and coastal ecosystems) that have accumulated a large body of traditional ecological knowledge that contains local indicators of climate change based on generations of observations.

Field research was conducted in more than 20 villages and settlements of the Ysyk-Kul region, during which data was collected from 220 respondents. A review of the existing climate change models for Kyrgyzstan (Central Asia) was completed. A list of local climate change indicators was compiled and verified.
