Engaruka Community Initiative Organization (ENCO)
The initiative sought to protect and improve access to ecosystem services, strengthen the economic structure of the pastoral communities, and spread the knowledge of solutions that local Maasai communities have to adopt in the face of Climate Change—an integrated approach to sustainable management of ecosystem services in land, forestry, and livelihood opportunities.
10 kitchen gardens were established that improved families’ nutrition and provided an additional source of income. Distributed drought-tolerant and termite-resistant trees with high-quality timber provide fodder and fruits for livestock and for scaling up the afforestation of their rangelands. Strengthening the capacity of women to use their knowledge for adaptation.
