Background and objective: The Rendille practice nomadic life, they raise their livestock in almost 9000 sq. miles (14,500 sq km) in the arid semi-desert in southern Marsabit County, bordered on the north by the Chalbi Desert. The major challenge is the vastness.
The proposal is about revitalizing and preserving the endangered Rendillle language through writing and publishing of reading materials. The ultimate goal is to use of the language in a wide medium of communication and expression, including homes, schools, places of worship, public forums and on markets for business.The language will make community members being interconnected through speaking, reading and writing.
In addition, to stimulate the use of the Rendille language across all generations, the schools organize cultural awareness campaigns. This is an annual cultural festival in Korr where children, youth and elders come together in an event that displays Rendille artifacts collections and entertainments.
Local partner information: Tirrim Group of schools works under the Tirrim Development Program a non-profit Christian organization founded by AIC Korr in 1999 in the Kaisut Desert of Northern Kenya. Over the years it has provided public development through education, community development, provision of clean water, education scholarship and outreach program.
