Background and objective:
The project seeks to decolonize the practices/attitudes of the young generation from the market-oriented food system to a traditional food production system, rebuild the local livestock economy in order to improve nutrition, food security and meet other household basic needs, document traditional knowledge on food systems and to revive traditional occupation of indigenous peoples on beadwork by using innovation and modern technologies to create a wider market so as to rebuild household economy. It will focus on the introduction of goats dairy farming as strategy for strengthening traditional food generation practices and also to rebuild local economies and facilitating documentation, learning and traditional knowledge intergenerational transfer of traditional foods food systems. The project will also undertake policy advocacy with relevant county government authorities (ministry of trade and culture) for policy initiatives and policy interventions on traditional food systems.
Local partner information: MPIDO Mainyoito Pastoralists Integrated Development Organization(MPIDO) was established in 1996 and registered as a non-governmental organization in 2000 with key objectives of securing and promoting; the social, political and economic welfare of indigenous Communities. MPIDO curves her niche into pursuing Livelihoods and food security, Human rights, climate change intervention, mitigation & adaptation; governance and conflict resolution, natural resource management; Gender, women and youth empowerment responses targeting all pastoralists, hunter and gatherer communities in Kenya.
