Traditional Climate and Livelihood Adaptation for Hmong, Khmu, Lao women of Laos PDR

Background and objective:
Hmong and Khmu women are economically and socially impacted by the adverse effects of climate change, and have a unique insight into mitigating damage within their communities. GDA is proposing to conduct baseline surveys to document the traditional knowledge utilized by Hmong and Khmu women in agriculture and practices used to mitigate the effects of climate change and maintain traditional livelihoods. Then, workshops will be conducted in 6 villages to encourage knowledge exchange on traditional efforts. It will also encourage Hmong and Khmu women to take leadership roles within their communities by providing seed funding to 6 villages to tackle a chosen problem. GDA will ensure Hmong and Khmu women lead these projects and support their execution to ensure long term sustainability and preservation of traditional ethnic practices.

The target communities have been realized what they were facing climate change issues and challenges situation in the different communities.They has been exchanged good information and practices of women to adjust with climate change from different traditional livelihood among target villages and how to encourage the role of women in decision-making level and gender inclusion in climate adaptation.


Local partner information:

The Gender Development Association (GDA) is a non-profit association (NPA) that has promoted gender equality in Laos since 1991 via advocacy, education, and research-driven initiatives. Currently, GDA has 54 members and 23 network organizations (NGOsand NPAs) that GDA supports with capacity building programming to mainstream gender equality through policy and development projects.
