Promotion and extension of traditional plant species for food security and income generation to sustain indigenous communities in Thailand

Local Partner: Network of Indigenous Peoples in Thailand (NIPT)

Background and objective:
The objective of the project is to promote and extend the use of selected traditional plant species to enhance food security and income generation for indigenous families and communities. This process builds on the outcome of previous projects and consists on selecting a few potential plants which have a high nutritional value and will serve as pilots for household income generation activities and community funds. The project will be implemented in three pilot areas in partnership and collaboration with the Maejo University and Chiang Rai Rajabhat University. Outcomes and knowledge gained from the project will be shared widely with NIPT and CIPT members, as well as indigenous communities

Information on nutrition and chemical facts of 3 identified plants was completed and used for packaging design. Three pilot communities involved in this Initiative have increased capacities on plant propagation. Reports from 3 pilot areas especially on plant propagation were compiled and used for future planning and extension programme. Learning materials were produced and shared among the NIPT members and other interested indigenous communities. These included VDO clips, news stories and posters.A lesson learnt report on implementation of this initiative was produced, photocopied and shared with NIPT members.
