Fortaleciendo la resiliencia al cambio climático de hombres y mujeres kichwa de Limoncocha

Local Partner: ASOKIL- Asociación Kichwa de Limoncocha (ASOKIL)

In order to face climate change in the Ecuadorian Amazon, the indigenous community of Limoncocha, through the Kichwa Association of Limoncocha (ASOKIL), seeks to implement activities that complement their traditional livelihoods and at the same time recover their ancestral knowledge. The general objectives of the proposal include, improve the access to water from natural sources; improve ancestral food and medicine through the use of local products; improve cooking methods by making them more efficient and sustainable; and respond to the urgent needs of the population due to the effects derived from COVID-19.

To meet its objectives ASOKIL plans to construct three mixed water wells with water pumps and manual cranks in places that lack water; documentation and creation of a seed bank and the subsequent construction of family gardens with local products; and the construction of 3 efficient wood-burning stoves in the community’s communal houses.

ASOKIL was created in 1984 and immersed in the Kichwa Nationality of the Ecuadorian Amazon. It is comprised by two peoples that share the same linguistic and cultural tradition: the Napo-Kichwa people and the Kichwa people of Pastaza.

The project will be implemented in through the Kichwa Association of Limoncocha whose members are the 1,000 individuals who live in Limoncocha. It is a member of CONFENIAE in the Amazon region and is part of CONAIE at the national level. Given that ASOKIL is part of these indigenous governance structures, there could be a multiplier effect of good practices in the area, derived from the activities implemented by the project
