GUYASA CBO

Guyasa CBO was established in the year 2004 and dully registered with the Ministry of Culture and Social Service. The Organization was founded by the indigenous community living in Kina Division, Garbatulla district. The Organization objective is to stop of erosion of the rich cultural heritage through strategic cultural based approach.

The organization will pursue this mission through place-based work in areas chosen for their potential to withstand and recover from global erosion of diversity. We focus on backing the efforts of locally recognized indigenous Community custodians of this heritage and their alliances as well.

The purpose of the project is to develop and support the capacity and effectiveness of Guyasa and Ibse Boran Band to extend their experience and collaborative leadership in the area of innovative and performing art towards the revitalization of Boran Waso peoples’ cultural heritage, language and rights through music, festival, drama, poetry, storytelling, art and craft, games and sports.

It will involve the creation of a cultural center of excellence in Kina, northern Kenya, where old and contemporary Boran Waso culture and art instruments meet, enrich, fuse; where local artists receive the support necessary for creativity, where melodious messages on land rights including the sanctity of sacred sites, human rights, gender equity and peace building are generated and disseminated, and where indigenous knowledge is passed on for posterity.

The project will enable the members of the two complementary and collaborating organizations to learn from the older generation, to promote the adaptation of old art to current needs, creation of new ideas and acquisition of new skills, to teach the younger generation and to entertain, to promote inter-community interaction so as to build bridges of understanding and peaceful coexistence and to mobilize the society towards the attainment of greater visibility, rights recognition and prosperity.

Enhanced revival of traditional music, dances and music, children understanding of the cultural ceremonies, practical knowledge and skills on traditional games and sports, skills on mother tongue among children.
