Protecting the sacredness and richness of the forests of the Mandaya to strengthen traditional knowledge and enhance climate resilience

SILDAP SE (Silingang Dapit sa Sidlakang Mindanao) is a Philippine partner of Tebtebba under the Indigenous Peoples’ Global Partnership on Climate Change, Forests and Sustainable Development, a partnership composed of 18 indigenous organizations and NGOs from 13 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. As partner, SILDAP is focused on implementation of indigenous peoples’ sustainable, self-determined development in its communities in Maco municipality in Compostela Province, southern Mindanao through community strengthening. This involves capacity building on indigenous peoples’ rights and strengthening of traditional knowledge; strengthening climate resilience through traditional knowledge and innovations; support for traditional sustainable low-carbon livelihoods; and community monitoring (through community-based monitoring and information systems/CBMIS), participatory mapping and resource inventory.

The project aims to strengthen forest management and protection using traditional knowledge, so that the indigenous Mandaya are better able to strengthen climate resilience. Strengthening community governance will result to the protection of the forest against any form of desecration and destruction and contribute to strengthened climate adaptation and mitigation using traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples.

Strengthened indigenous governance and cultural values on sustainable resource use within the IPSSDD framework. 35 individuals were trained in Leadership ,Initiative Management and IPR . Community awareness for at least 129 individuals (including settlers) for the rights of Indigenous people’s, Women’s Rights, relevant Environmental Laws and Climate change. Establish territorial Map of Mandaya tribe in Brgy. Calapagan.. Establishment of hectares of Abaca and Coffee farms. Knowledge related to development models for enhancement of productivity and ecosystem goods and services of socio-ecological production lanscape and other ecosystems are generated , shared and popularized.
