WEAVING MEMORIES, HEALING COMMUNITIES

WEAVING MEMORIES, HEALING COMMUNITIES:
Indigenous Peoples in Myanmar Reclaim Culture and Resilience

Across Indigenous communities in Myanmar, people are strengthening cultural identity and community resilience through Indigenous-led initiatives rooted in traditional knowledge and collective action.
Supported by Promotion of Indigenous Peoples and Nature Together (POINT), the initiative brought together communities to preserve cultural heritage, promote environmental stewardship, revitalize traditional livelihoods, and strengthen community well-being.

By placing Indigenous leadership and knowledge at the center, the project reaffirmed the deep connections between culture, land, and identity. A key focus of the initiative was the transmission of Indigenous knowledge across generations.
Communities documented traditional pottery-making, weaving, environmental poems, and Indigenous attire while engaging elders, women, youth, and children in cultural learning and environmental education.

Indigenous celebrations, storytelling, language activities, and livelihood trainings strengthened cultural pride while reinforcing sustainable livelihoods rooted in traditional skills and ecological knowledge.
The initiative also supported community well-being through humanitarian assistance, psychosocial healing, and capacity-building on Indigenous Peoples’ rights and leadership.

According to the cultural evaluation, these efforts strengthened community confidence, encouraged greater participation in local decision-making, and reinforced cultural continuity through intergenerational learning. The project demonstrates that Indigenous resilience is sustained through cultural renewal, mutual support, and the continued practice of Indigenous knowledge and traditions despite evolving challenges.

(The initiative “Strengthening the Resilience of Indigenous Communities in Myanmar” was implemented by POINT in 2025 with the support and accompaniment of Pawanka Fund.)
