Initiation Ceremony
LAN PAWANKA is a global program of the Pawanka Fund that emerged from a participatory organizational assessment conducted with its strategic partners across the world’s seven sociocultural regions. Inspired by the Miskitu language, “Lan” means “to learn” and “Pawanka” means “to grow and become stronger”; thus, the program is conceived as a collective process of empowerment rooted in indigenous knowledge. The assessment identified the cultural identity and roots of indigenous organizations as a central strength, recognized as the foundation of their legitimacy and cohesion, which is reinforced by the identification of community governance practices based on consensus decision-making present in 73% of the organizations that participated in the collective organizational assessment.
At the same time, it highlighted key structural challenges that guide the program’s design, including: a high dependence on external funding (over 80%), critical weaknesses in institutional memory due to the lack of systematic mechanisms for recording and transmitting information (91%), gaps in document management with scattered archives and risk of loss (55%), limitations in digital capabilities related to connectivity and technical training (73%), and challenges in achieving greater inclusion of women, youth, and traditional knowledge holders in leadership roles (55%). In response to these findings, the LAN PAWANKA is structured around a multi-level operational model, designed to address the gaps identified in the assessment:
Overall, the program aims to build capacity, foster indigenous knowledge, and forge partnerships, thereby strengthening the autonomy, organizational sustainability, and leadership of indigenous peoples within a new paradigm of fair, horizontal, and culturally relevant cooperation.
