Steppe Discoveries: Exploring the Steppe Ecosystems and Cultural Heritage of Eastern Mongolia

Eco-club of Bayan Uul Secondary School

The goal of the “Steppe Discoveries” program is to provide an immersive educational experience for middle and high school students, giving them a unique opportunity to explore the rich grassland ecology and cultural heritage of Eastern Mongolia which spans 110,425 square miles and is globally significant for its vast grassland wilderness and the traditional stewardship and care demonstrated by Mongolian herders. This pristine landscape accommodates migratory herds of Mongolian gazelle, along with grey wolves, Siberian marmots, and various bird species, including cranes and eagles. However, the steppe faces challenges of illegal hunting, expanding livestock production, and mining activities that disrupt the migration of the Mongolian gazelle and cause pasture degradation.

To inculcate among young indigenous youths the importance of their traditional and cultural systems and practices in protecting their region (The Eastern Mongolian Steppe) and strengthen their understanding of this ecosystem to ensure its conservation.
