Language Revitalization

Ujamaa Community Resource Team (UCRT)

The Akie language is an endangered indigenous language spoken by the Akie community in Tanzania. It is crucial to preserve and revitalise the Akie language as part of the cultural heritage and to ensure the community’s identity and well-being. This initiative outlines a plan for revitalising the Akie language, focusing on community engagement, education, documentation, and technological support.

To preserve a language under threat of loss is critical for the identity of the Akie community by engaging the community through community meetings and workshops, establishing a language revitalisation committee, and encouraging intergenerational communication. Recording of language classes will aim to create a sustainable framework for the revitalisation of the Akie language.
