Grounding the work to document and transmit mother tongue in school

Center for Culture, Indigenous Knowledge and Experiential Learning. (CCIKEL)

The initiative aimed to sustain and amplify ongoing efforts to document, protect, promote, and transmit the mother tongue for the current and future generations. The purpose was to recruit and nurture a new generation of language speakers and support the process by making written materials available in vernacular, formal teaching methodology, and teaching aids in a conducive learning environment.

The initiative retained two local language and content teachers and worked with short-term teachers, several of them voluntarily. In addition, promoted peer-to-peer education conducted by former students.
They published several copies of different booklets in the Oromo language for children to improve their reading and speaking of their mother tongue. The booklets contain information about their plants, animals, climate, and spirituality.
