Documentation of Traditional Health Practices of Chittagong Hill Tracts

Background and objective: Indigenous peoples are not constitutionally recognized in Bangladesh. The mainstream society identify their traditional practices and ways of living as primitive and backward. However, for indigenous peoples, the traditional systems are the essential part of their identity, traditional knowledge, culture and right to self-determination. The fact is that in many cases numbers of traditional knowledge and practices have been significantly contributing to sustain and wellbeing of the indigenous communities 

The project aims to document, revitalize and promote traditional health system of indigenous peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), Bangladesh to promote good health and wellbeing of the peoples. The project will be implemented with 09 indigenous peoples communities in the CHT to understand and document their traditional health system including their healing systems, medicines, knowledge and practices related to health promotion, prevention of illness, treatments and rehabilitation. Finally, the project is contributing to the recognition of the existence of the indigenous peoples and their important role in planning and implementation of development actions at local and national level. 
Local Partner information: Women Resource Network (WRN) was established on 23 November 2001 under the Hill Tracts NGO Forum (HTNF). WRN is strengthen and continuing its activities with active support from the Maleya Foundation, the capacity building wing of HTNF. The mission of WRN is to establish a strong women network with all women organizations and experienced women rights activists of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) to realize Indigenous women’s rights.
