Customary Land Use of Saami in Deatnu Water Basin in Finland

The aim of project is continue to collect information on customs and customary law on Saami land use and Saami governance systems concerning land use in Deatnu Water Basin in Finland through interviews of Saami traditional knowledge holders and through archive research. The area covers Deatnu (about 50 kilometres around Veahčajohka and Veahčajohka). Land use methods of subsistence economics of the Saami are documented, such as fishing, hunting, reindeer herding and also cultural sites are documented, the main focus of the project is in the traditional fishing. 
Local Partner:
Sámi Human Rights Association ALVA was established 14th of August, 2018. The main purpose of the Alva – Sámi Human Rights ry. association is to promote the self-determination and right to equality for the Saami. ALVA is only the administrative body of the project, while the Saami rights holders of the area are owners of the materials, thus the intellectual property rights remain within the rights holders. 

Part of the result is filling the gaps of documentation the earlier initiative in land use and documenting the traditional knowledge of the fishing and the settlement in the area. Documentation of the history of the indigenous Saami in Veahčak. See separate attachment.
