Documenting the Adaptation and Mitigation of the Indigenous Peoples toward Climate Change in Haruku Island

Local Partner: Rekam Jejak Alam Nusantara Foundation (YRJAN)

Background and  objective:

Very few people in Indonesia are aware and willing to take action toward reducing the environmental destruction and its impact on our ecosystem. Moreover, there is need to gain more ideas and good practices on how Eli started his first initiative to conserve the Moluccan megapode (also known as Moluccan Scrubfowl) and fighting the negative impacts from climate change, so that people can learn together and ultimately connect to multiply this initiative in other regions especially those living in small islands and coastal areas. By exploring the indigenous knowledge and identity, we can gain lessons-learned and build trust; along with a wider network, to enhance mutual understanding and goals for the sustainability of our future. Especially in Haruku Island, Central Maluku, its is believed that Eliza Marthen Kissya widely known as “Om Eli”, an inspiring eco-leader, trailblazer, yet a poem writer and occasional singer, can develop and further generate public awareness and interests toward ethno-conservation and recently his role in fighting high tides as negative impact of climate change. The project is committed to cover its finding and information that ensure high-quality insight throughout capacity development program and documentary film production.

In-depth writing about their own stories and practices on climate change adaptation. 2. Documentary film about an inspirational leader; Eliza M. Kissya and his outstanding perseverance in the conservation effort. 3. Their self-produced documentary films about the ongoing issues, potentials, or local initiatives that can raise public awareness and interests.

Local partner information: Rekam Jejak Alam Nusantara Foundation (YRJAN) was established in 2013 by Indonesian environmentalist, media experts, wildlife researchers, and marine biodiversity researchers. The founders of YRJAN have an extensive knowledge and experience in the sciences and media fields, and share the same vision, to recognize and showcase the importance of conserving nature and culture of the archipelago of Indonesia.

YRJAN’s mission is to disseminate information to various groups and generate public awareness about biodiversity and its importance via documentary film production, mass communication, and education. We also conduct research on Indonesia’s natural wealth, culture, and biodiversity, then present these through audio-visual production, images, and design graphics that are attractive and understandable to the wider public.
