Cafe Melanesia: our lands, our foods, our future

Save PNG Inc.

Background and objective

The Life Melanesian project led by Save PNG Inc., works to increase community health, food sovereignty and agro-biodiversity by increasing climate resiliency amongst Melanesians throughout the Pacific. In collaboration with our Slow Food Melanesia network and regional partners, Save PNG will produce an educational kit complete with audio-video materials, study booklet, and facilitator’s guide on indigenous food pathways and agricultural innovations to educate target audiences in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, and Vanuatu & New Caledonia.

The Cafe Melanesia project works to increase community wellbeing, food sovereignty and agro-biodiversity by sharing indigenous food knowledge amongst local communities. Save PNG will use an educational video model to inform youth, women and families about how local medicinal foods, nutritional diversity and traditional cooking encourages community resilience and strengthens indigenous governance structures. This valuable information will reach both rural and urban populations through television and web broadcasts, peer group education and communication kit distribution.

Promoted and raised the profile of local advocates in elevating indigenous knowledge as a key factor in responsible food, health and community development. Youth, women and family groups are educated on the socio-economic, cultural and community benefits of sustainable food and indigenous culinary practices from a grass roots approach.
