LOCAL PARTNER: Mujeres indígenas organizadas de KISALAYA
Indigenous women from three Miskito communities located in the North Caribbean Autonomous Region of Nicaragua will strengthen traditional food and production systems in three different ecosystems – river, plain and tropical forest – using inter-learning, processing, marketing, and alternative communication systems. As a result, they will strengthen the economic autonomy and integral empowerment of indigenous women and their communities.
By improving the economy of the families of three communities, it increases their capacity to achieve a higher standard of living. Kisalaya’s experience has shown that when women have economic income, domestic violence has been reduced and women occupy administrative and political positions in the communities. The project is based on an affirmative action measure that has proved to be successful over the last 10 years in the Wangki area. This measure provides knowledge, specifically to women, to share within households and communities as well as equal relations between women and men, thus providing them with resources for economic empowerment.
Local Partner:
The [initial] experience contributed to generating a movement across 115 communities of the Wangki, establishing an effective annual mechanism to guide a women’s forum with almost 1,000 women from 115 communities.
The project aims to expand this experience to communities located in other territories such as Waulalaya and Sahsa, using as a central axis the organization of women interested in applying their traditional knowledge to strengthen their economic autonomy, comprehensive administrative strengthening, articulating the fight against violence, for autonomy and for improving community conditions.
