Indigenous Food System

Unlike the dominant food production system, indigenous food systems are based on centuries of accumulated wisdom and have allowed for a measured use of resources, ensuring that they are not depleted for present and future generations. These systems are not only crucial for food security and food sovereignty, but also for cultural identity, spiritual well-being, and land stewardship. Traditional food systems, which in addition to food include medicines and water cycle management, ensure a balance of adequate nutrients that are locally produced and linked to a sustainable and equitable pattern. They ensure environmental integrity and access to food for all members of the communities. The Pawanka Fund supports the revitalization, protection, and strengthening of indigenous food systems.
